Raul, Satpathy shine, but Orissa bow to Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh proved themselves too good for Orissa on home conditions when they registered a 10-wicket win in their four-day Ranji Trophy Group-C Super League match on the last day at Modi Stadium in Kanpur today. This was overall 68th loss in a total of 171 Ranji Trophy matches for Orissa and first loss in their only game against Uttar Pradesh.

Of course, four players put up notable performance for Orissa. But these were not enough to save them from defeat. Riding on an unbeaten 108 by Sanjay Raul (198 balls, 14x4), Orissa accumulated a respectable total of 241 after captain Shiv Sundar Das won the toss and decided to bat.

But a century each by captain Gyanendra Pandey and Rizwan Shamshad enabled Uttar Pradesh take a first-innings lead of 246 runs after being all out for 487. Offie Sanjay Satpathy was most successful Orissa bowler, bagging six wickets for 147 runs.

Orissa, however, escaped the ignominy of innings defeat by mustering 257 in their second innings. That became possible, thanks to a half-century each by Raul (82), Rashmi Ranjan Parida (69) and P Jayachandra (65 not out). Uttar Pradesh clinched victory by overhauling a mini target of 12 runs without losing any wicket.
